ABOUT THE PROJECT

In early 2011, Erik started developing an unidentified intestinal malfunction, which made bowel movement erratic and the colon become constantly inflamed. Through three years, his condition worsened, and medical diagnoses in Brazil were inconclusive at best, such that, by 2014, when the malfunction had become a mild, acute internal bleeding that acted up around 6-9 times a year, treatment was sought abroad. After some search, Erik found a path towards medical improvement in Massachussetts General Hospital and, in 8 months starting from October 2014, made an exponential recovery that put his life back on track.
Rapid amelioration brought unto Erik a newfound sense of gratitude towards the artifices that life gave him and the tools he had had to find adequate life-saving treatment. In tandem, he also grew more conscious of the lack of medical opportunity others had in his terribly socially unequal hometown of Rio de Janeiro. With a brooding vigor to assist this target community, he set about drafting a social entrepreneurship plan - this is when the idea for IdeasLux dawned upon him. Originally, the focus of the startup was to assist purely medical NGOs, but he later broadened the company's horizons by opening doors to any type of equity-seeking nonprofit.

In this sense, the partnership with Operation Smile was sought due not just to its medical focus, but also to hard-earned, untarnished reputation. Erik knew from the start that establishing anything of value as an underage student would be nigh impossible, and he needed to strike a partnership with a global, credible NGO to assert his seriousness. The partnership with Naam Yoga LA came unexpectedly, through a mutual friend, but became, at lightning speeds, a highly fruitious endeavor. Casa Arte Vida is an equity-focused nonprofit, which fits perfectly with IdeasLux's vision, but a concrete project will only start being undertaken, due to timing issues, as of late April.

Following a similar school of thought as that used before, the decision to make IdeasLux's engagement withOperation Smile be based on food catering came from the notion of both the booming food catering services in Rio, especiallly those in vehicles (bikes/trucks) and the lack of philanthropic options within the vendors, as well as Erik's experience with food catering due to several successful class bake sales he led as then 10th grade class president. At the same time, using pens for the Naam Yoga campaign was done because of the ease with which this item in need could be prouduced in bulk, and to question the perceived expendability of the biro.

What kickstarted the original project idea
About the founder

Erik M. Novak is a 17-year old 11th grader at the American School of Rio de Janeiro with a passion for social entrepreneurship and applied math. Organizing IdeasLux has been an incredible chance for him to give back to his community, and it has also given him an unparalleled learning opportunity concerning fundraising, accountability, professionalism and planning ahead. Arguably the most intense learning process from the whole project has been that of transmitting business credibility and trust despite being underage; this process has, however, become easier with the continued success of IdeasLux campaigns.

Project description

IdeasLux aims to fundraise for equity-oriented nonprofits, with a focus on creating impacting, memorable, simple fundraising campaigns that make heavy use of crowdfunding techniques and uniting masses.

The first focus in this description, that of impact and simplicity, is IdeasLux's niche differential, as the success of the fundraising campaigns is often driven much by their sheer innovation and originality.

The second part of this description, that of the focus on crowds, explains the means by which this project tackles a societal paradigm shift in Rio de Janeiro towards greater charitability and support for philanthropic initiatives.

The aims of this organization are thus two-fold: to enlighten the fundraising practices of equity NGOs, and to show the power of a community united in togetherness.

Project development hallmark: AASSA GIN 2015

One of the greatest pushers during the embryonatic stages of this project was Erik's participation as a head organizer in the AASSA GIN 2015 conference, held at his school, the American School of Rio de Janeiro. For his leadership role, he was tasked with organizing the keynote speakers and the NGO fair; that is, a fair where over 20 different NGOs were to expound upon their engagement and work to the conference at large. This particular task deeply impacted Erik, as he came face-to-face with social entrepreneurship at its most raw form in incredible quantities while contacting each of the nonprofits. This is also the reason why he decided to expand the scope of his project beyond simply medical initiatives, and into equity as a whole. Finally, this event was what allowed him to make powerful contacts in the nonprofit system in Brazil that he keeps in touch with to this day, and wa an opportunity for him to bridge relations with the Operation Smile representatives in Brazil.
